Menorca at your own pace: how to move around the island and organize your visits

Menorca is a small but surprisingly diverse island, with many interesting areas to explore: paradisiacal beaches, charming villages, nature trails, historical monuments and spectacular viewpoints. To organize your vacation well, it is important to know the different areas, plan what to visit each day and have a general idea of travel times.

Main areas of Menorca

The south of Menorca is known for its white sandy coves and turquoise waters, such as Cala en Turqueta, Macarella, Mitjana or Binibeca. These beaches tend to have easier access, nearby parking and services such as bars or umbrella rental, so they are highly recommended for families and those seeking comfort.

The north, on the other hand, offers wilder and less crowded landscapes, such as Cala Pregonda, Cavalleria, Cala Pilar or the area of the Favàritx lighthouse. This part of the island is perfect for those looking for nature in its purest state, snorkeling and hiking.

The center of the island is home to charming villages such as Es Mercadal, Alaior or Ferreries, where you can discover local life, craft markets, and an excellent gastronomic offer. It is also the best area to access the Camí de Cavalls routes.

The main cities, Mahón and Ciutadella, deserve at least half a day each. Mahon surprises with its natural harbor, British architecture and cultural atmosphere, while Ciutadella stands out for its old town, churches, squares and sunsets by the sea.

Tips to organize your visits

  • Divide the island into zones and dedicate a day to each one. The distance between Mahón and Ciutadella, for example, is about 45 minutes by main road.
  • Check the access to the coves before you go: some require a 15 to 30 minute walk from the parking lot.
  • Always carry water, sunscreen, a hat, appropriate footwear and some food if you go to coves without services.
  • Check the weather and sea conditions if you plan to do water activities or boat trips.
  • If you travel in high season, try to leave early to avoid crowds, especially in popular coves.

By organizing your visits well, you will be able to enjoy the best of Menorca without stress and with the necessary flexibility to leave room for improvisation.
